Nicolas de Oliveira and Nicola Oxley are London-based curators and writers who co-direct SE8 Gallery and the publishing imprint Mulberry Tree Press, which specialises in artists’ monographs and vinyl editions. They were previously founding directors of the Museum of Installation (MOI), Unit 7 Gallery and Notice Gallery. Their books published by major publishers include Installation Art in the New Millennium: Empire of the Senses, two seminal international surveys of installation art, as well as several monographs on Hans Op de Beeck (Belgium), Stefan Brüggemann (Mexico) and Patrick Jolley (Ireland). These publications stem from close working relationships with artists and galleries. Their work also includes short fiction. Throughout their careers, they have curated around 200 solo and group exhibitions and projects, working with artists from different generations and international contexts, including Phyllida Barlow, Mariko Mori, Hans Op de Beeck, Helena Almeida and Julião Sarmento. They have also collaborated with leading institutions and galleries, such as Tate Modern, the British Museum and the Leal Rios Foundation, in Lisbon and Porto, developing a curatorial practice that brings together diverse geographies and artistic languages. Both have extensive experience in art education. Nicola Oxley previously held positions leading Fine Art courses, while Nicolas de Oliveira directed the MA in Curating in partnership with the Whitechapel Gallery and served as Director of Research at Montabonel & Partners/Art Institutions of the 21st Century. At SE8 Gallery, they continue an experimental approach that understands exhibition-making as a process of research and creation, closely aligned with the idea of the extended studio. Through Mulberry Tree Press, they extend their dialogue with artists and explore the relationships between artwork, documentation and narrative, helping to preserve the history of installation art and trace its international development.
