Notas do episódio

Tinham pintado a parede onde agora estava escrito: "É a tua vez, doutor". [English] This week's episode is different. We talked about Syria with Alaa Alhariri, a Syrian student living in Portugal. On 16 February 2011, a 14-year-old boy took a can of black paint, looked at a wall in his school, laughed and painted it. His older friends, who had pressurised him to do it, laughed too and were proud of the little prank. The next day, there was no talk of anything else at school. They had painted the wall where it now read: ‘Your turn, Doctor’. The ‘doctor’ was Bashar al-Assad, the leader of the Syrian regime who is also an ophthalmologist, and he was suggesting the fall of the dictator, as had been seen in Tunisia with Ben Ali, and shortly afterwards in Egypt with the fall of Mubarak. Soon after the prank, the boys were arrested by the regime. They were arrested and tortured. Their nails were pulled out, they were given electric shocks and beaten. And one of them, Hamza Ali al-Khateeb, was even tortured to death. Then the protests began, and a revolution broke out that unleashed one of the most violent civil wars shown today in a few minutes of television news. Alaa Alhariri was at those protests, which he describes so well in the episode, and he tells us about Syria before all this happened. We talk about Syria before the war, how the protests began, the reaction of Bashar al-Assad's regime, the refugee crisis, Daesh, and what is happening today in Damascus, where Alaa Alhariri's family still lives. Listen to the episode here and let us know what you think. Exceptionally, this episode is in English because, although Alaa Alhariri speaks some Portuguese, she feels more comfortable in English.
