Notas do episódio

The path was set. Defending the country through the army would mean honouring his ancestors and protecting his family and whoever came next. This is what he learnt at school, at home or through the media. At the age of 19, he fulfilled his dream and began his compulsory military service, but it was only a short time later - and little by little - that he began to question his mission as part of the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces). At every checkpoint for no apparent reason, at every raid on innocent people's homes, at every arbitrary arrest, one question loomed large in his mind: ‘Is what we're doing defending Israel?’ Years later, the question was answered: ‘No. What we're doing in the West Bank and Gaza is defending the occupation.’ That's what made him leave the army and join Breaking The Silence, a non-profit organisation of former Israeli soldiers who share testimonies of how the occupation is practised in Palestine. Today, Ori Givati is the organisation's spokesperson and head of international relations. In a month in which the Israeli state has carried out yet another massacre in Gaza, we talk about the role of the Israeli army in the occupation of Palestine.
