October 13, 1917 70,000 people gathered that day, despite bad weather, for the promised Apparition. Among the crowd were also many who did not believe in the Apparitions, as well as journalists from important Portuguese newspapers to report events. Our Lady appeared while people prayed the rosary and identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary. She instructed the children to pray the rosary every day and to build a chapel in honor of Her. She also said: "Do not offend God Our Lord who is already very offended". Then he opened his hands and made them reflect in the sun. And as it rose, the reflection of His own light continued to shine on the sun. During the sun miracle, many people fell on mud and wet soil, thinking that it would be the end of the world. Later, many spectators report that, despite being covered in mud, when they rose they were no longer wet or dirty. Rose petals fell from the sky, only to soon dissipate before being touched by anyone. After Our Lady disappeared into the expanse of the firmament, the children saw, beside the sun, St. Joseph with the Child Jesus and Our Lady dressed in white, with a blue cloak. S. José with the Child seemed to bless the world with a hand gesture in the shape of a cross. When the Apparition faded, the children saw Our Lord and Our Lady of Sorrows. Our Lord seemed to bless the world in the same way as St. Joseph. This apparition also faded, making way for the vision of Nossa Senhora do Carmo.
