Today we speak with Marina Barham, co-founder and general director of Al-Harah Theater in Beit Jala, near Bethlehem. The name says a great deal: *al-harah* means “the neighbourhood”. Founded in January 2005 by a group who had been part of the INAD Theatre, Al-Harah is a non-profit that makes highly artistic yet accessible theatre through productions, festivals, touring, and training, and with a particular commitment to children, young people, and marginalised communities. Marina grew up in Beit Jala. She came to theatre almost by accident, after working with UNRWA and running her own consultancy, and has since spent two decades using drama to help children and adults carry the trauma of occupation. She organises the Yalla Yalla International Children and Youth Theater Festival, a name that shares its spirit with this show, and has served as president of the Palestinian Performing Arts Network and on the board of the international network IETM. In this conversation, we discuss theatre rooted in a neighbourhood, making art when the space itself is a target, the wall that is swallowing Beit Jala’s olive groves, theatre as care for wounded children, and the refusal to let those killed in Gaza become “only numbers”. 🔔 Subscribe to the channel and turn on the notifications so you don't miss any episodes! 📢 Support independent media production: https://www.dontskiphumanity.com/support-en 📲 Follow us on social media: @dontskiphumanity 📺 YALLA is a series that delves into the Palestinian struggle.
