The Soul of Minho Sculpted in Wood with Boaventura Pereira In this captivating episode of Portugal à Vista S07E25, we dive deep into the heart of traditional Portuguese crafts and the ancient identity of the Minho region through the hands of artisan Boaventura Pereira. Based in Arcozelo, Barcelos, this 69-year-old wood sculptor reveals how retirement finally granted him the freedom to pursue his lifelong dream of creating popular art. Co-Creating Art with Nature The unexpected artistic revival of Boaventura Pereira sparked during the COVID-19 isolation in Vira do Minho. Turning isolation into inspiration, he began collecting unique roots and branches, allowing the organic shapes of the wood to dictate his designs. Working with raw materials like mountain-grown torga (heather) and coastal driftwood shaped by the Atlantic ocean, he views nature as the primary artist. Every single piece—from his very first traditional Portuguese rooster to an intricate sculpture of Rainha Santa Isabel—tells a story of rural memory. This episode explores his deep emotional connection to the craft, his creative patience that can span years for a single piece, and the legacy inherited from his father. It is an inspiring story of finding true fulfillment and happiness in heritage storytelling.
