Bioma Cerrado - Desmatamento.

Notas do episódio

Cerrado vegetation decreased around 8 thousand km2 from July 2019 to August 2020. Losses were greater in the states of Maranhão, Tocantins and Bahia. Deforestation is equivalent to almost 5 times the area of the city of São Paulo. The main threats to the Cerrado occur due to the expansion of the agricultural frontier, mainly in the States of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia). Known as the Caixa D’água do Brasil, for its enormous potential to collect and store water, the Cerrado already has its first refugees for water. Populations that started to migrate, because the streams that served their communities of origin simply dried up. But before the arrival of soybeans, before we started, as a country, to look at the native vegetation of the Cerrado as an “empty space” to be occupied, thousands of people already lived in this biome, existing amid the abundance of the biome, as for example the babassu coconut breakers. The Cerrado and its fruits are part of the life of many Brazilians and this biodiversity, the wonderful services that this biome provides us, is essential for everyone, from north to south. On the other hand, it is one of the most threatened: We have already deforested 51% of the Brazilian cerrado. The advance of destruction in the biome has even been faster than the advance over the Amazon. This is very worrying and it is necessary to understand its causes and the alternatives to such devastation. We need to look more closely at this biome - the Cerrado.
