Bioma Pantanal: incêndios

Notas do episódio

In South America, the water cycle depends largely on what happens in the Pantanal, a wetland larger than Greece that encompasses Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia. Very recently, about 25% of the vast wetland of the Pantanal in Brazil, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, was burned in forest fires aggravated by climate change. In the Pantanal, its numerous marshes, lagoons and tributaries purify the water and help prevent floods and droughts. They also store untold amounts of carbon, which helps to stabilize the climate. For a long time, farmers used fire to clear fields and new land. But recently, the drought exacerbated by climate change has turned swamps into a powder keg and fires have spread out of control. At least 22% of the Pantanal in Brazil burned for almost six months. As ecosystems are interconnected, the well-being of wetlands is at the mercy of prosperous agriculture in the surrounding highlands. The huge fields of soy, cattle and other grains - raw materials that are exchanged globally - erode the soil that reaches the Pantanal and clog their rivers so much that some of them have turned into accidental dams and steal water from the flow that goes to the downstream area. Rampant deforestation and related fires in neighboring Amazonia also create a ripple effect by disrupting the “flying rivers” of the rainforest that contribute to precipitation in the Pantanal. There are solutions to save the Pantanal. Scientists offer some suggestions: reduce climate change immediately. Practice sustainable agriculture in and around the wetland. Pay farmers to preserve forests and other natural areas on their land. Do not divert the waters of the swamp because your life depends on the pulse of the flood.
