Ilhas de calor. Heat Island.

Notas do episódio

Heat Island - Definition - an urban area having higher average temperature than its rural surroundings owing to the greater absorption, retention, and generation of heat by its buildings, pavements, and human activities. Today you will know what a heat island is. A heat island is an effect observed in urban and suburban areas, where air and surface temperatures are warmer than in rural areas in the surrounding area. The formation and presence of heat islands in the world are negative for the environment, as they favor the intensification of the phenomenon of global warming. In general, heat islands occur in the centres of large cities due to several factors; we can highlight some of these factors: - high heat absorption capacity of urban surfaces such as asphalt, brick or concrete walls, clay and asbestos tiles; - lack of areas with the presence of vegetation, impairing the reflective power of a given surface (the greater the presence of vegetation, the greater the reflective power); - waterproofing of soils by sidewalks and diversion of water by manholes and galleries, which reduces the evaporation process; - large number of buildings, which interfere with the circulation of winds; - atmospheric pollution that retains heat radiation, causing the atmosphere to heat up, thus causing the greenhouse effect; - use of diesel and gasoline energy by internal combustion vehicles, as well as by industries, increasing the heating of the atmosphere. Due to these factors, the atmospheric air in the city is warmer than in the areas surrounding this city. We can list some measures to prevent the formation of urban heat islands: 1 - Planting of trees in large quantities in large cities and the creation of parks and preservation of green areas. The first way for a tree to contribute to combating heat islands is to provide shadows. 2 - Measures to reduce air pollution: reduction and control of the emission of polluting gases by vehicles and control of pollutants emitted by industries.
