Poluição por plásticos e aquecimento global

Notas do episódio

Plastics made from polyethylene, the raw material for supermarket bags, release methane and ethylene during their decomposition process at sea and in the environment - a recent study showed. Once exposed to the air, floating on the surface of the ocean or clogging beaches, the rate of release of these gases is almost 80 times higher than when submerged. The release of gases gains even more strength when the product is broken down into microparticles. And the most worrying: once exposed to sunlight, the emission process continues even in the dark. Preliminary studies estimate that there are about 150 million tonnes of plastic in the ocean. And the expectation is that, by 2050, there will be more plastic in the seas than fish. Collecting all this material from the ocean also poses even more challenges. Recent research shows that it is still not possible to recycle the plastic collected from the sea, since its exposure to solar radiation alters its thermal and mechanical properties, making the process unfeasible. More investment in environmental awareness and education is needed, a change in thinking. One of the biggest problems is supermarket bags, they fly and go very far. This is easy to reduce, you can exchange it for paper, and it is not in the environment. It is a matter of showing this danger to people, to raise awareness. It is no longer a question of marine life, which is important, but also of our life.
