Presépio. Nativity Scene.

Notas do episódio

A palavra “presépio” significa estábulo, manjedoura. The word “nativity scene” means stable, manger. A Saint named Francis of Assisi started the tradition in 1223, in the vicinity of Greccio, Italy. His goal was to celebrate Christmas in the most realistic way possible. There is no solid historical basis for the presence of animals in the crib, and it has a symbolic meaning, open to interpretation. Considering that Francisco de Assis lived in the countryside, the ox was a very useful animal, as he plowed the land. The donkey, in turn, was the service animal of the poor, of simple people. Lambs, on the other hand, were essential for obtaining milk, meat and wool. The sheep also represents innocence and purity. Furthermore, although it has no direct association with the nativity scene, it is known that Francisco de Assis - considered the protector of animals and the patron saint of ecology - even exchanged a mantle to save two lambs that were about to be sold by a merchant, to slaughter. In the story of Jesus, since his birth, then, the option for poverty, for stripping, linked to real Christmas symbols, which is often reduced to the consumerist pretensions of the current world, is clear. Santa Claus is a contemporary invention, it has nothing to do with Christian tradition. Many people allow themselves to be carried away by things that are completely foreign and superficial, while the crib refers exactly to the essential, to the expression of gratuity. Taking care of our common home is also building the nativity scene. Merry Christmas to you!
